A 1940’s Wedding
This Weekend my parents drove all the way from Hereford, to see me in mine and Eddies flat in Cheshire, I had asked them to bring anything 1940’s they could find around the house for a shoot I am planning next month, and they did brilliantly thank goodness they are such hoarders. They brought with them some fab items, but what took me by surprise what my Grandparents wedding Album. The photographs are so stunning, and I love the outfits and hearing the story from my mum about how they met.
Margaret Appleyard Married Albert John Hundy Married on 19th Feburary 1949, in Ixworth St. Mary’s church. (My Granny and Granddad).
My Granddad was stationed in Suffolk during the war, and one night was invited to a Dance held at a big country house. My Granny wasn’t usually allowed to attend dances, but due to knowing the family holding the dance, she was just this once allowed to attend. It was hear she met my Granddad. Who she married once the war was over.
I love this story I can imagine a Dr Pepper seniro, ‘whats the worst that can happen’, when my great-grandparents let there daughter out to attend the dance. Little did they know she would return home, after meeting the love of her life. It must of been horrible to have met someone during the war, not knowing whether you would ever see them again. My Granddad was part of the Warwickshire Yeomanry, and during the second world war served in Iraq, Syria, Persia and Palestine. While my Granny was part of the Women’s Voluntary Service, who “played a key part in the evacuation of civilians from urban areas.
Here is my Granny leaving her house with her father Reginald Appleyard about to go to the Church.
My Granny’s Dress was white lace with little buttons all the way down the front, her flowers where a lilly of the valley spray bouquet. My Granny hired the dress for her wedding, due to fabric rationing which continued after the war, wedding dresses were very expensive and hiring of dresses was common.
I love seeing what everyone was wearing, my Great Auntie Noreen, (Standing next to my Grandad) wore a blue velvet dress, I am sure this would have look lovely at the winter wedding. I also think my Granddad looks so smart and handsome in his top hat and tails.
As my grandparents came out of the church they was greeted and showered with confetti by lots of other members of the Women’s Voluntary Service. I love the image above they both look so happy also how cute is the little girl behind my Granny, in the photograph above!
Is this photograph above you can see my Granny’s, fab shoes! I was totally wear these now.
In with the wedding album was the receipts for the flowers, it’s really interested seeing exactly what they had, and how much it was.
Both families had farming backgrounds, which is one of the reasons why my grandparents married in February between growing and harvesting seasons. I loved looking through these photographs, I hope you did too.
Tomorrow: Other ways I am marketing the business, other than wedding fayres.
